An advice blog for disabled students

About

Why was Spoons in the Ocean Created?

Spoons in the ocean was set up because when I was preparing to go to university, I found that, in my experience being a student with an invisible disability, there was very little advice or anything out there for disabled students.

So I wanted to share everything I’ve learnt or wish I’d known more about, from my experiences, to hopefully help as many people as I can.

Why ‘Spoons in the Ocean’?

The spoon part of the name refers to the Spoon Theory which is often used to describe chronic pain and other conditions in a way that is easier for those without these conditions to understand.

A link to a more in depth description of this theory- https://www.healthline.com/health/spoon-theory-chronic-illness-explained-like-never-before#4

The ocean part simply refers to the fact I am a marine biology student and have a love for the ocean so wanted to incorporate it somehow

About me

I am a marine biology student with a condition called fibromyalgia. It causes chronic pain, fatigue, cognitive issues and many other things. I also have anxiety.

My cognitive issues, in particular speech issues, often make it difficult to explain things in a coherent way. So I created this blog to provide a way to give advice and help people in a way that actually works for me.

So I really hope that this blog can help even just one person who is going to or at uni because I think that everyone should have the opportunity to do well despite any barriers they face.
